It’s time to put down the cigarettes and step into the world of vaping.
We totally understand that it can be a daunting and overwhelming thought as a beginner to vape kits. With a huge range of beginner vape kits on the market it is difficult to know where to start. There are so many electronic cigarettes to choose from and a few things to learn before you make the switch.
This is a vape for beginners guide that will help you make the switch to vaping. You will quickly reap the benefits of this cleaner and less harmful alternative to smoking tobacco.
How to Get Started with Vape Kits
There are four main components to take into consideration when choosing a vape starter kit:
- Drip Tip
All vape devices either include an in-built or require an external battery. Inbuilt batteries are present in most vape kits for beginners and are normally charged using a micro USB or USB-C cable. External batteries are generally reserved for powerful sub ohm vaping devices. Vape batteries are generally 18650 lithium batteries. These can sometimes be charged while in the device with a USB, but are mostly charged using an external charger.
The power of the batteries (mAh) should be taken into consideration when purchasing electronic cigarette starter kits. If you are a heavy smoker and believe that you will vape for the majority of the day, then you will need something that will last.
The battery in a kit is a key part to any device as this is what powers the heating of the coil.
Coil & Drip Tip
A coil is looped metal wire with cotton running through the centre. The cotton absorbs the e-liquid contained inside the tank and the coil heats it. The eJuice then evaporates tuning into vapour that you can inhale.
Coils can vary in resistance. They can be anything from 0.1 ohm to 2.5 ohm. We recommend that a beginner vapour starts on a coil that is greater than 1 ohm. Anything under 1 ohm is preferably used for sub-ohm and advanced users. Coils that are 1.0 ohm and greater are best used with 50% VG refills. You can use our Coil Finder to find compatible coils for your vape device or tank.
The mouth piece or "drip tip" is the part of the vape then your mouth rests on. When you inhale, vapour is drawn up from the coil chamber and through your mouth piece into your mouth or lungs.
Tanks are the part of the vape device responsible for holding your e-juice. All tanks in the UK are legally limited in capacity to a maximum of 2ml.
The first type of tank on a vape device comes in the form of a circular container that screws into a modular device. These are commonly known as "510 tanks" as this describes the connector at the bottom of the tank that screws into the device. The 510 naming in vape tanks comes from the fact that the connector Is 5mm in length with 10 threads running across it.
The second type of tanks are known as "pods" or "cartridges". These are different to 510 tanks as these are most commonly found on vape pens or simpler vape kits. These pods or cartridges are most commonly disposable and are higher in resistance than 510 tanks.
Recommendations for your first e-Cigarette
Electronic cigarettes can come in many shapes and sizes. In order to get started we recommend looking into the following popular vape starter options.
Cig-a-likes are a popular form of e-cigarette that are designed to look and feel like a traditional cigarette. They are discrete and lightweight and mimic the action and style of a cigarette. These are disposable and cannot be refilled with your own liquid. These can be a great start to your switch, however they have a very limited battery life and can end up costing more in the long run.
2. Pod Kits
Pod kits are relatively new and very popular in the market. They are popular as they use pre-filled or refillable pods, which is used in place of a more complicated standard 510 tank. There’s two different types of pods:
- Closed Pod Kit - A fixed coil is used inside the pod with pre-filled liquid. These pods are thrown away once the liquid runs out and replaced.
- Refillable or Open Pod Kit - These pod kits allow you to refill your cartridge with your desired liquid and strength. They tend to last longer than closed pod kits and you just simple replace the pod when the coil wears out.
Advanced open pod kits are are also available. These allow you to use different types of coils in the pod device to suit your preferred vaping style.
Pod kits are small and lightweight, and fit straight into your pocket. Pod kits allow you to use higher nicotine strengths, which mimics the sensation of smoking. Our recommended pod kit is the Caliburn by UWELL. This device is best used with 50% VG refills.
3. Vape Pens
Vape pens are one of the most popular styles amongst new vapers. Like pod kits, vape pen kits are generally simple to use. Vape pens normally support a variety of coils that can choose from to suit your vaping needs.
Vape pen kits have an in built battery and can be charged using a USB. The batteries in vape pens generally las longer than pod kits. Generally speaking, the replaceable component in vape pens is the coil rather than the entire cartridge as is the case with pod kits.
Our recommendation for the best vape pen kit is the Aspire PockeX. This device has also been designed to be used with lower resistance coils. This gives you more flexibility in using higher VG liquids for a more intense flavour and greater vapour production.
4. Box Mod Kits
Box mod kits are mostly used by intermediate to advanced vapers. These kits generally require an external lithium-ion 18650 battery and therefore provide you with more power. However, there are now more kits on the market which are manufactured with inbuilt batteries making things a lot easier for the user.
Box mod kits can give you the option of changing the temperature and wattages that you would like to vape at. They all generally also come with adjustable airflow for a more enhanced vape. Box mod kits are mostly bulkier and heavier than the other vape kits. They are more customisable and are mostly used with High VG liquids, allowing you to produce huge clouds and more enhanced flavours.
Our recommendation for the best box mod vape kit is the FreeMax Maxus 200W device.
A new vapers experience with vaping can drastically change based on the type of coil, liquid and device used. It’s important to get the right combination to make your vaping experience a successful one. It may take a few attempts to get these combinations right, but stick with it. With the right combination, switching from cigarettes will be a breeze.
